Maybe Not This Time: An Update

Well as many of you know, awhile back one of my stories was accepted for publication this month in This Mutant Life magazine.  I thought I’d come give you all an update on that front, as I know I haven’t mentioned it lately and it is January.

Thus far I haven’t heard anything from the publisher, and I’m afraid this one is going to fall through.  With small time magazines of this nature, this is always a possibility.  Without proper funding and organization, small publishers quite frequently fall out of business.

With that said, I’m not sure if that is the case with This Mutant Life.  I sent an email out in the middle of January asking the editor when the release date was going to be, etc.  I have received no word back.  Upon checking the website several times, I have seen no updates.  And there is no link to click for the picture of this month’s issue.

In my own mind, I have concluded that my story will not be published this month in this particular magazine.  I am a little surprised to find that this does not discourage, depress or in any way bring my spirits down.  Instead, I am shrugging this one off and waiting to see what happens by the end of this month (which is quickly approaching).  My only remaining hope for publication in This Mutant Life is in the fact that this is an Australian magazine and thus the shipping could take longer.  But realistically speaking – it looks like “Just a Regular Hero” (the story in question) will soon be submitted to a new publisher.

As I said, I am in no way defeated.  This is the name of the game – sometimes things don’t work out.  It is enough for me to know that a small time publisher out there at least thought mine was good enough to select, even if they for some reason were unable to carry out the publishing of the story/issue.  There are hundreds of open markets out there to which I can go and I am looking forward to a bright future for my writing.

Thank you all for your support and encouragement.

  1. Hi Alexis,

I’ve also got a story slated for the January issue of This Mutant Life and haven’t heard anything. Like you I’ve been a bit concerned and have emailed the editor.

I’ve published there before, and the editor is a good person who cares about the mag and his writers. However, he may have simply been overwhelmed with things and fallen behind schedule. For the time being, I wouldn’t worry too much … at least not yet. If Duotrope declares this a ‘dead market’, then submit elsewhere, but for the moment I’d hold on a little longer.

Personally, I’m looking forward to reading your story – as well as that of other contributors.

    All the best,

    1. Hey Philip,

Good to hear from you! Thanks for contacting me. I am very excited about the magazine, and would love to see it continue to grow and prosper (livelong and prosper, lol?). As I mentioned in my post, I’m not terribly concerned at the moment. I can only imagine how difficult it is to run your own magazine, so I certainly understand that it would be easy to fall behind.

Hopefully everything will work out and I’ll get to read your story in the next issue! 🙂

      Warmest Regards,

  2. Hi Alexis,

Just a quick update. I heard back from This Mutant Life and good news. The January issue has only been delayed, likely until March. As I suspected life has resulted in some backlog on the magazine and website (and these are good developments in the editors life, so good stuff all round!). So it looks like we’ll be reading each others stories after all.

    All the best,

    1. Hey Phil,

That is fantastic news! Thank you for sharing; I definitely appreciate the update. 🙂 I think I can wait until March to see both our stories in print. Once again, thanks for keeping me updated.

      Warmest Regards,
