Moments and Milestones

There are moments that stand out as you look back at your life.  Milestones – important birthdays, your first kiss, getting your driver’s license, your wedding day – you name it.

Today is a milestone for me.

Today I completed God’s Thunder, my fantasy NaNoWriMo novel.  It is the first novel I have completed since I was around age nine.  I’ve struggled to complete a novel over the several years.  I attempted in vain to write The Five Staffs of Meledari, but never could.  After awhile I gave up.  I decided to write short stories and flash fiction.

And I’ve learned something, I think.

I am a short fiction writer.  I’m not a novelist.

But I did write a novel.  To show I could and to tell a tale I really wanted to tell.

God’s Thunder may not be well received by many.  It has lots of flaws which I hope to edit out.  It has a huge religious emphasis – not in a Christian way necessarily.  Raamiah is a warrior dedicated to the seven gods of his people – and his faith plays a huge role in his life.  It’s the major theme of the story and you know what – I’m happy with that.  I’m happy with the story and it was a real thrill to write.

I finished God’s Thunder in just 19 days.  It’s rough as heck, but I hope there’s a gem in there somewhere.

The next question I’m getting asked is will I seek to publish it.  The answer?  I don’t really know.  I’ll probably focus on editing in December or perhaps January.  I may investigate traditional publishing, but I’m not sure it’s good enough for that.  Don’t worry though – any one who is interested in reading it will get to one day.  If all else fails, I’ll publish it via Lulu or something so others can read it.

Anyways, I just wanted to share this moment in my life.  I feel proud to stand here with this accomplishment, and I thank every one of you amazing people who supported and encouraged me along the way.

  1. Well it looks like Congratulations are in order, for a great milestone. I know the feeling of writing a novel and I am so sure that this milestone is just the beginning. I have failed my first attempt at a novel and I keep rewriting it. Just when you least expect it, I have a feeling this is one step to go forward. I have thought of my epic novel many times since I was nine. I never give up on the writing of the novel.
Hey the funny thing is I am writing about religion as well for my Nanwrimo, The Immortal Breeds is my title. After all you done in nineteen days is an achievemnet that should be celebrated and continued when you feel like you want to be that novelist. Hey I hope this encouragement is left open in your mind and as a long term goal because most of the authors/writers out there actually started out as short story and flash fiction writers. I know you feel comfortable where you are but food for thought; just know that I know that your stories that I have read here online and in books has one thing ‘it grabs the reader and drags the reader in to your story’; what more can a writer wish for? Hey I hope this is a hint to think more about the novelist in you. 😉

  2. Congrats! I’m almost done my NaNo word count too, and I know the wicked rush of adrenaline that accompanies such a bad-ass task. I wish you all the very best in editing your epic novel, and I can’t wait to read it!!!
