Well hullo there!

It’s been a long time since I used this space for anything besides standard story publication announcements. Did you wonder what happened to me? No, of course not, if you follow me on Twitter you know I’ve been busy trying to get a baby to sleep, poop, eat and all that other fun stuff!

Anyway, I’m excited to embark on a new fiction challenge for 2017. If you know me, you know I ADORE a good challenge or contest. Story-a-Day May is my favorite month of the year and in 2016 I discovered the glories of the Wyrm’s Gauntlet.

This is a challenge I set for myself going into 2017. It’s quite simple–write one short story per month in 2017. Twelve stories for twelve months. In chatting about my goal on Twitter with Julie Day, founder of the Story-a-Day May challenge, we hit on the hashtag. The idea was well-received on Twitter and now we have an excellent little group doing their/our best to meet the goal.

Julie interviewed me recently on the subject, which you can read here.

Everyone sort of tinkers with the parameters of the challenge a bit and comes up with their own rules. Personally, I have way too much flash fiction (published and in my inventory) and not nearly enough short fiction, so my goal is twelve stories of 2-4k words each. Ideally, I’ll also edit and submit them each month, but we’ll see how that goes. Bare minimum is doing the drafting!

I’ve already hit my goal for this month and written two stories actually. There will be a couple flash pieces this month as well as I’m participating in the excellent “Weekend Warrior” contest on Codex–a forum for neo-pro writers.

So it’s exciting! It feels good to be back in the writing game, even if I can’t devote as much time to it as I’d like. If you’re a writer yourself, feel free to jump in on the challenge as well! We’re using the #12for12stories hashtag to sort of keep track of each other and update with our progress and whatnot. And it’s still January. Not too late to join!

On that note, I will leave you kind people and wish you a (belated) Happy New Year!
